If you have never been to Filoli Gardens in the Bay Area of Northern California, then you are in for a treat. It is such a stunning historic property and offers couples who are looking for a unique engagement location to truly be transported to an English garden with beautiful architecture. We went in the Summer months and on a Friday and were still able to find secluded spots for photography locations without the interruption of the large amount who visit the gardens each day. However, if you are wanting a less busy and less hot weather, then going in the Fall is very pretty too. Just take into account the times of year plants will be in bloom.
A tip to make things easier, buy your tickets online and buy them at least two weeks early because they do sell out. Parking was very easy and included in the ticket cost even on the busy day we went. We were able to walk freely on the grounds and explore the iconic Sunken Garden as well as the Historic House finding hidden nooks all along the way. I couldn’t be happier to have shared in A & R’s sweet love story.
You can find a map of property to plan your visit here.
Planning your session around sunset may be possible in the Fall and Winter months, however just check their closing times ahead. I recommend at least 2 hours to walk around and be able to explore if not more if having an outfit change etc. This is such a beautiful property, you and your fiancé can just relax and hangout for a little picnic or date after session is over too. Being in the gardens is very calming.
One of A & R’s things was they do not feel too comfortable in front of the camera, so we chatted and got to know each other while we walked to the first spot I had scouted. My style of photography always leans towards a timeless approach with genuine emotion. I want these memories to be loved for generations, not just stick to the passing trends. I do adore movement and black and white imagery as well, so the images really document the feeling of being in love.
